Chapters | What Is A Curse? By Prophet Dr. Samo Mtishiby

Understanding the subject of curses is essential because Scripture presents both blessings and curses as spiritual realities that influence human life. From Genesis to Revelation, God’s Word reveals that obedience brings blessing, while rebellion and disobedience carry consequences. Every believer is therefore called to pursue God’s blessing by walking in obedience and covenant relationship with Him.

A curse may be understood as a negative declaration spoken by a person who possesses authority over another person or, in some cases, over a particular object, place, or situation. Words spoken from a position of authority are not regarded as ordinary speech. They carry spiritual significance and have the potential to influence lives, families, and even generations.

The significance of spoken words is first demonstrated in creation itself. God created the heavens and the earth through His spoken word, revealing that words possess the ability to establish, direct, and bring forth His purposes. Throughout Scripture, spoken words continue to influence lives, relationships, and spiritual realities, whether released as blessings, judgments, corrections, or prophetic declarations.

A curse begins as spoken words. Those words do not remain mere speech. When released from a position of authority, they enter a spiritual process before their effects become visible. Like a seed planted beneath the ground, a curse may remain hidden for a season while moving towards manifestation.

During this period of incubation, nothing may appear unusual on the surface, yet an unseen spiritual process is taking place. Eventually, its effects become visible through recurring patterns such as limitation, delay, repeated failure, broken relationships, oppression, or other forms of hardship.

This principle helps explain why some people experience the consequences of words or actions many years after they were first spoken or committed. The cause may have existed long before the manifestation became evident. In the same way that a seed requires time before producing fruit, a curse may operate silently before revealing its effects.

A curse may therefore be understood as a spiritual barrier that limits progress and hinders the fulfillment of God’s intended purpose. Like a chain, a wall, a prison, or a closed door, it seeks to restrict advancement and produce recurring cycles of struggle. Its operation is often quiet, yet its effects may extend beyond one individual to affect families and successive generations if left unaddressed.

For this reason, Scripture repeatedly emphasizes the power of words. Proverbs declares, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21), reminding believers that speech has the capacity to produce either blessing or destruction.

James also warns that although the tongue is a small member of the body, it possesses tremendous influence. He compares it to a small spark capable of setting an entire forest on fire and cautions believers against allowing the same mouth to produce both blessing and cursing (James 3:5–10).

Believers are called to exercise wisdom and restraint in speech. Words spoken in anger, bitterness, jealousy, pain, frustration, or drunkenness should never be treated lightly.

Instead, every believer should seek to speak words that impart life, encouragement, truth, healing, and blessing, recognizing that the tongue is one of the most powerful instruments entrusted to humanity. Ultimately, spoken words reveal the condition of the heart. As believers continually submit their hearts to God, their speech increasingly reflects His character, His truth, and His purposes.

How A Curse Operates

Having understood what a curse is and the spiritual significance of words spoken under authority, it is now important to understand how a curse operates. A curse is not merely a negative statement that disappears after it is spoken. Rather, once released, it begins a spiritual process that may eventually influence the life of the person against whom it was spoken.

Stages In The Operation Of A Curse

Every curse begins with a cause. It does not arise without a reason or a legal ground. A curse may originate through spoken words, disobedience, broken covenants, dishonour, idolatry, bloodshed, rebellion, or other violations of God’s principles. Scripture therefore declares, “Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse does not come to rest” (Proverbs 26:2).

Initiation

The first stage is initiation. This is the moment when a negative declaration is spoken or when a spiritual transaction establishes the foundation upon which a curse may begin to operate. Although the effects may not be immediately visible, the process has already begun.

Activation

Not every curse becomes active immediately. A curse may exist as a spoken word, a spiritual transaction, an act of disobedience, or a negative decree, yet remain dormant until the conditions necessary for its operation have been established. Activation may occur through continued disobedience, agreement with negative words, participation in sinful practices, covenant violations, dishonour, idolatry, bloodshed, or other actions that create an opening for the curse to manifest.

Incubation

Following activation, a curse does not always produce immediate consequences. Like a seed planted beneath the soil, it often passes through a period of incubation before its effects become visible. During this stage, circumstances may appear normal while an unseen spiritual process continues to develop. This explains why some individuals experience difficulties years after the original cause occurred. The cause may have been established long before the consequences became evident.

The principle of sowing and reaping illustrates this reality. Actions, words, and decisions often produce consequences long after they have occurred. Scripture reminds believers, “Whatever a man sows, that shall he also reap” (Galatians 6:7–8). In the same way, a curse may remain hidden for a season before eventually manifesting its effects.

6:7–8). In the same way, a curse may remain hidden for a

Manifestation

After a period of incubation, the effects of a curse begin to appear. These may be observed through recurring patterns such as delay, limitation, repeated failure, broken relationships, stagnation, barrenness, financial hardship, recurring illnesses, or other forms of oppression. Although the curse itself remains unseen, its effects become increasingly evident.

One of the most dangerous characteristics of a curse is that it rarely announces its presence. Rather than appearing suddenly, it often works quietly while gradually producing visible effects. Many people expect dramatic manifestations, yet a curse is more often recognized by the recurring patterns it leaves behind than by extraordinary events.

Just as a disease may exist in the body before symptoms appear, a curse may operate long before its effects are recognized. Its silence should never be mistaken for inactivity. Though hidden from natural sight, it continues to work until its consequences become visible.

Establishment

If left unaddressed, a curse may eventually become established, influencing multiple areas of a person’s life and, in some cases, extending into successive generations. This explains why certain patterns of limitation, hardship, or failure appear repeatedly within the same family line.

Understanding how a curse operates enables believers to recognize that many spiritual problems do not begin where they become visible. What is seen outwardly is often the result of an earlier spiritual process. Recognizing these principles encourages believers to seek God through repentance, obedience, and covenant faithfulness while looking to Him for restoration.

Authority & The Power Of Spoken Words

One of the most important principles in understanding blessings and curses is the principle of authority. Scripture reveals that not every spoken word carries the same spiritual weight. Words spoken under God-established authority possess greater influence because authority gives force and responsibility to what is declared.

God has established authority within the family, spiritual leadership, and society. Parents exercise authority over their children, leaders over those entrusted to their care, while God remains the supreme authority over all creation.

Throughout Scripture, authority is consistently accompanied by responsibility, and words spoken under such authority often carried lasting spiritual consequences. This principle is illustrated throughout Scripture. Noah pronounced judgment upon Canaan and blessings upon Shem and Japheth (Genesis 9:24–27). Isaac’s blessing over Jacob remained effective even after he discovered that Esau had been deceived. Before his death, Jacob spoke prophetic declarations over each of his sons, while Moses pronounced blessings upon the tribes of Israel. Elijah likewise exercised prophetic authority when he declared that there would be neither dew nor rain except at his word (1 Kings 17:1).

These examples demonstrate that authority determines the spiritual weight of spoken words. A father’s words carry greater significance in the lives of his children than the words of a stranger. Likewise, the words of a spiritual leader carry particular significance for those under his spiritual care. Understanding this principle encourages believers to honour God-established authority while guarding against rebellion, dishonour, and careless speech.

The Power Of Spoken Blessings And Curses

Having understood the principle of authority, it is now important to understand how blessings and curses operate through spoken declarations. Throughout Scripture, words spoken under God-given authority became instruments through which blessings, judgments, and prophetic destinies were released. They shaped lives, influenced generations, and revealed God’s purposes for individuals and nations.

The life of Isaac provides one of the clearest illustrations of this principle. Isaac pronounced a blessing over Jacob, declaring that God would give him the dew of heaven, the richness of the earth, abundance of grain and new wine, and authority over nations. He further declared that those who blessed Jacob would be blessed and those who cursed him would be cursed (Genesis 27:27–29). Even after discovering that Jacob had received the blessing instead of Esau, Isaac affirmed, “I have blessed him, and indeed he shall be blessed,” demonstrating that words spoken under God-given authority were regarded as carrying lasting spiritual significance.

Before his death, Jacob gathered his twelve sons and spoke prophetic declarations over each of them. He declared their character, inheritance, responsibilities, and future. Reuben was told that because of his instability he would not excel, Judah received the promise of leadership, and Joseph received abundant blessings of fruitfulness and strength.

These declarations became prophetic foundations for the twelve tribes of Israel (Genesis 49:1–28). Moses likewise blessed the tribes of Israel before his death, speaking words of encouragement, protection, and divine favour over each tribe (Deuteronomy 33:1–29). Earlier, he had presented Israel with two paths, declaring that obedience would bring blessing, prosperity, fruitfulness, protection, and victory over their enemies, while persistent disobedience would result in hardship, defeat, disease, captivity, and other covenant curses (Deuteronomy 28). He concluded by urging the people to choose life rather than death, blessing rather than cursing, through obedience to the Lord (Deuteronomy 30:19).

The account of Balaam further reinforces this principle. King Balak sought to have Israel cursed so that the nation might become weak before battle. Balaam, however, declared, “How can I curse those whom God has not cursed?” He later proclaimed, “I have received a command to bless; He has blessed, and I cannot reverse it” (Numbers 23:8–20).

These examples demonstrate that blessings and curses released under God-given authority possess enduring spiritual significance. They remind believers that words should always be used to bless, encourage, instruct, and build rather than to discourage, wound, or destroy.

Why Many People Fail To Recognize Curses

Many people recognize the effects of a curse without recognizing the curse itself. They see the symptoms but fail to identify their root cause.

One reason this occurs is that the curses often develop gradually. When a problem develops slowly over time, it becomes familiar and is eventually accepted as a normal part of life. Recurring patterns of limitation, delay, failure, broken relationships, or financial hardship may therefore be viewed as ordinary circumstances rather than possible indicators of a deeper spiritual problem.

Scripture emphasizes the importance of spiritual understanding. The prophet Hosea declared, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6), showing that a lack of spiritual understanding may leave people suffering under conditions they neither recognize nor know how to address.

Discernment enables believers to recognize recurring patterns, seek God, and pursue appropriate spiritual remedies.

Why Curses Should Never Be Taken Lightly

The seriousness of curses is demonstrated throughout Scripture. Entire families, kingdoms, and generations experienced the consequences of disobedience, rebellion, idolatry, bloodshed, and dishonour.

Many people fear demons and evil spirits while underestimating the destructive influence of a curse. A curse may affect health, relationships, finances, inheritance, productivity, reputation, and future generations. Its effects may continue for years before becoming fully apparent.

The account of Balak and Balaam illustrates how seriously curses were regarded. Balak believed that if Israel could be cursed, the nation would become weak before its enemies. Yet God restrained Balaam, who declared, “How can I curse those whom God has not cursed?” and later proclaimed, “He has blessed, and I cannot reverse it.” This account reminds believers that no one can successfully curse those whom God has determined to bless.

Another example appears after the destruction of Jericho. Joshua declared that whoever rebuilt the city would do so at the cost of his firstborn and youngest sons (Joshua 6:26). Many years later, during the reign of King Ahab, Hiel of Bethel rebuilt Jericho, and Joshua’s words were fulfilled exactly as they had been spoken (1 Kings 16:34). This demonstrates the enduring significance of declarations made under divine authority.

Believers are therefore called to walk in obedience, seek God’s wisdom, repent where necessary, and avoid actions that create opportunities for destructive spiritual consequences.

Conclusion

Understanding the nature of curses provides the foundation for the chapters that follow. Having examined what a curse is, the power of spoken words, the role of authority, and the manner in which curses operate, we are now prepared to examine their causes, effects, and the biblical principles that govern their operation.
