And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.
Judges 2:10 KJV
Judges 2:10 tells us of two different generations. First, a generation that gathered unto their fathers, followed their ways and served the God of their fathers. Then a generation that did not know the LORD nor pay attention to the works which the Lord had done for their fathers.
How can there be such a distinct difference between generations that follow each other? What could they have done or not done that would have changed this outcome?
If we are not careful, I see the latter generation arising on our watch. I see a generation arising that is unaware or has little appreciation for what those who have gone before them have done. My heart is troubled by the rate at which men of God are being attacked and shamed by โChristiansโ in our nation. Men that have poured their lives to make sure that the Gospel has been spread. Men that have purposed to destroy every work of the enemy.
Jesus Christ in Matthew 23:29-32 condemned the Pharisees and the scribes for doing the same things that their forefathers had done. They were killing their own prophets all the while condemning their forefathers for doing so (v.30).
Brothers and sisters, we will be held accountable for how we relate and deal with them that have preceded us. If we desire to see revival fall in our nation and the hand of God upon us, we have to stand at the crossroads and ask about the old paths that our fathersโ walked on.
God will not reinvent the wheel. King Solomon, the wisest man on earth, said it well: there is nothing new under the sun. For us to experience the full manifestation of the glory of God, we have to know the God of our fathers. The God that our fathers have served.
Why is it, when God wanted to deliver the children of Israel from Egypt, He did not re-introduce Himself to them? He told Moses: when you get to Egypt, tell them that the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob has sent you.
Who really is the God of our fathers? Why the God of our fathers? These are the questions this book is attempting to answer. This book seeks to redirect our steps back to those taken by our fathers.
The path weโre on is such that if we were to stop and look back, just like Judges 2:10 tells us, there will be a generation that will not know of God.
Between Malachi and Mathew, there is a four hundred year silence where the people could not hear from God. 1 Samuel 3:1 speaks of a time when there was no open vision. We cannot allow such times to repeat themselves. Yes, the world is moving at high speed, but we have to have some moments to look back and this book gives us such a moment.
This book is based on 1 Chronicles 28:9 where during his last days on earth, David gave advice to his son Solomon who was to continue with the legacy of his father. Iโm writing to fathers and their children.
Fathers because they have a responsibility to make sure they raise Godly children. Proverbs 13:22 says that a good man leaves an inheritance to their children.
As much as fathers have a responsibility towards their children, the children themselves have a responsibility to know the God that their fathers worship and ensure continuity of the Kingdom of God.
